Vineyard Spotlight: Coyote Hole Craft Beverages

Located in Mineral, VA.

Coyote Hole Lake Anna Tasting Room

Can you provide a brief overview of the history and founding of your winery?

We were founded in 2016 as a cidery and events location that has since expanded to beer and our specialty sangria blending wine and cider. Coyote Hole has the best team striving for perfection and making our beverages available to all. We have launched and pivoted to the changing environments, and make sure to continue giving back to the community and the world.

What inspired the establishment of your winery, and how has it evolved over the years?

Our love for Apple Country and family-friendly events all came together in this idea. We've evolved with the changing times coming up with new products and new markets. Currently, we are about to launch some of the first Non-Alcoholic cider blends.

Are there any unique stories or anecdotes associated with the founding of your winery?

Coyote Hole is a mining term for our town Mineral, VA which has a rich mining history. Our love for history and mining gives us a unique perspective on running this business.

Can you highlight a few of your flagship or signature wines and what makes them stand out?

Oma Smith is our green apple cider made with Granny Smith apple juice. With our Dutch heritage, we named this cider to honor our late Oma and add some of our hearts. We also have our Sangria which is a unique blend of cider and wine with other fruits. Then there are many varieties we distribute and some are only available in the tasting room. We use 100% fresh-pressed Virginia apples!

Are there any particular vintages that you are especially proud of, and why?

We have our Sangria and a Ciderita that were especially popular. I am probably most proud of our Adventure Series. It's a lower ABV and better price point in this economy plus we are donating a portion of proceeds to the Cystic Fibrosis Foundation that is very close to our hearts as well.

How do you approach the creation of new wine varieties or blends?

We experiment in many different ways. Sometimes we test it out pre-fermentation and sometimes afterwards. It's always fun to start with a collaboration, like a honey farm or any local product.

Are there specific grape varieties that thrive in your vineyards, and why were they chosen?

We have planted a lot of pears, we love blending them in with the apples and they are harder to find.

Describe the atmosphere and experience visitors can expect at your tasting room.

We have music on and helpful staff to walk you through all the different options. You can do flights of everything or pick out a few to try. We have a full kitchen and lots of fun recipes using cider. We have frequent events like free line dancing lessons, trivia, comedy night, karaoke, and extra room to reserve if you want a private space. We've been adding in crafts and wellness activities as well.

Are there any unique events or activities that you host for visitors at your winery?: LOTS! We have tasting events, pairings, live music, and an upcoming Metaphysical market we host once a year in October. We also have a haunted trail with live scarers that takes you through a maze and into the woods @MineralHauntedWoods.

What do you hope guests take away from their visit to your winery?

We hope everyone feels welcome and has a fun, safe place to escape with us. Come alone or bring your whole crew! We'll make sure you have a great time.

Do you have any specific recommendations for food pairings with your wines?: We do mention pairings with our menu, and we do update this regularly with our specials and exclusive tasting room releases.

Are there certain dishes or cuisines that complement your wine portfolio particularly well?

BBQ and cider are always amazing!

How do you help customers enhance their dining experiences with your wines?

We have recommended pairings and we also have a wide variety of cider, wine, beer, seltzers, and nonalcoholic cider. Within those options, you can go for the flavor profiles you like the most.

How does your winery engage with the local community?

We live and work here in Louisa County. We are on several boards here and in areas we distribute. We dive in anywhere we go and help as much as we can. We are always combining fundraising for causes with our events and sales, or just donating funds or baskets to help others. We also make sure we are hosting and covering the expenses for a lot of safe/fun entertainment like Line dancing lessons that are monthly.

Are there sustainability initiatives or practices your winery is involved in?

We did move to all glassware even for tastings and we do have our own garden for fresh fruits and vegetables in our kitchen.

Do you support any charitable or environmental causes?

Cystic Fibrosis Foundation, UVA Athletics, Local authorities and emergency services, Local Clubs & Organizations, Louisa Humane Society
