VWDC Vineyard Spotlight - Southern Revere Cellars
Southern Revere Cellars

Can you provide a brief overview of the history and founding of your winery?

Family-owned and operated. The vineyard was established in 2019 and the tasting room opened in December of 2021.

Are there any unique stories or anecdotes associated with the founding of your winery?

Southern Revere is named after local Virginia folk hero, Jack Jouett, who during the Revolutionary War, made a daring 40-mile dash on horseback to Monticello, the home of Virginia Governor, Thomas Jefferson, to sound the alarm that British forces were on their way to capture the Founding Father. We have it on good authority that Jack Jouett, later dubbed the Paul Revere of the South, used to frequent his father’s Louisa tavern. So, in homage to local history and Jack’s proclivity for superior libations, Southern Revere celebrates our road’s namesake by being rooted in tradition and crafted with ambition.

Are there any particular vintages that you are especially proud of, and why?

Our 2021 Reserve Estate Chambourcin is produced from our very first harvest. This Reserve vintage was aged 18 months in American oak and is a dry and vividly colored wine. Notes of dark “jammy” fruit and black pepper, with a smooth finish, and medium body.

Are there specific grape varieties that thrive in your vineyards, and why were they chosen?

We grow Chardonel and Chambourcin grapes in our onsite vineyard and source a number of other varieties from around Virginia.
