What Your Porch Craves – 50 West
Summer in Virginia can be sweltering. On those days when the AC can’t quite keep up, many Virginians find relief by relaxing and socializing with a cool drink on their porch. When choosing the perfect wine, could there be a more perfect porch-sipping wine than a nice cool rosé?
Now, today’s rosé isn’t the same sweet wine you may remember from decades ago. Yesterday’s overly sweet white zins have given way to something more varied and sophisticated. Rosés produced from grapes like malbec and pinot have depth and character. In Virginia, one grape that is well suited for rosé production is the Sangiovese – a central and southern Italian grape. It is more commonly found in well-known blends like chianti and carmignano, but is *chef’s kiss* in a nice rosé.
At 50 West Vineyards, just outside of DC in Middleburg, Virginia, their Sangiovese Rosé is the main attraction. It is wildly popular with both visitors escaping the city and front porch sitters across the Commonwealth. Of course, 50 West’s rosé isn’t the only porch wine they’re churning out. Visitors looking for something a little brighter and punchier may want to try their Albariño, a crisp and acidic grape from the Iberian Peninsula. Or their vidal blanc, a hybrid grape that can offer hints of sweetness without being too overpowering.
No porch of your own? 50 West’s vineyard has plenty of picnic tables (reservations suggested) where you can relax with a cool breeze coming down off the mountains. Pair one of their award-winning wines with an array of cheeses, spreads, and breads prepared and ready to take to your table – their ciabatta bread is a crowd favorite.
