It’s hard to imagine a time when the Virginia landscape wasn’t dotted with vineyards, but the concept of “Virginia wine” used to elicit more of a confused look than a knowing nod. That public perception was just one of Bill Heidig’s challenges when he decided to convert the family farm into a vineyard in 1981.

These days, with modern resources and equipment, a vineyard can be up and running in a couple of seasons, complete with transplanted, mature vines and locally-sourced grapes to subsidize production. But Bill had to use a bit more elbow grease to get things going from the literal ground up, starting with planting 3000 vines in the summer of 1983. It wasn’t until 1990 that the first wines were produced out of the converted dairy barn.

Initially starting with Seyval Blanc and Chardonnay vines (with a little Cabernet Sauvignon tossed in for good measure), the Heidig’s have increased their grape production to 19 acres currently under production. They have also added several varietals that Virginia is known for – Cabernet Franc, Petit Verdot, and Traminette, to name a few.

Kick back with a glass of the very drinkable Lake Side Sunset, a semi-dry pink wine perfect for relaxing on a boat or catching some rays from your porch. You can sip all their offerings in their tasting room on your own or as part of the Heart of Virginia Wine Trail or the Grapes and Grains Trail – ticketed passports that offer deals, commemorative glasses, and help support Virginia wine and spirit production.
