They say it takes a village, and Wisdom Oaks Winery is no exception. Owners and husband and wife team Jason and Laura Lavallee run the winery with the help of their pack- consisting of four dogs, their baby Benjamin, and Laura’s mother.

Laura grew up in Maryland’s farm country, so she is no stranger to the rural life of winery ownership. After graduating from college in North Carolina, she landed a job at a financial firm in Philadelphia. It was there she met Jason. Jason grew up on Cape Cod, but yearned for a bigger city life, and moved to Philadelphia soon after receiving an athletic scholarship to Drexel University. They worked together for a full year before Laura’s office was moved next to Jason’s and they found they shared a mutual love for food, and of course, wine. Their love of wine and wanting to learn more about the topic gave them an excuse to spend time together. Eventually, that love brought them to leave the financial world and open Wisdom Oak Winery in the heart of the Monticello Wine Trail just outside of Charlottesville. Jason oversees all aspects of the vineyard, winemaking, and operations of the winery while Laura oversees the tasting room, compliance, human resources, events, and their wine club.

At their boutique, family run winery, Laura and Jason are dedicated to producing small batches of wine that come solely from the estate grown grapes from their 15 acres of vines. This small batch production allows them to highlight the very best qualities of each varietal their vineyards produce. They focus on producing high quality grapes that will produce high quality wine.

They currently have two production vineyards, one on site at Wisdom Oaks, and one just a few miles away at Bundoran Farm. What kind of grapes are they growing? Chardonnay, Petit Manseng, Sauvignon Blanc, Albarino, Cabernet Franc, Cabernet Sauvignon, Petit Vedot, and Merlot, with their biggest sellers being Petit Manseng, Sauvignon Blanc, and Petit Verdot. Their anticipated case production for 2021 is 4,000 cases, with plans to expand distribution capabilities beyond their tasting room, which opened in 2016.

Tucked in the beautiful foothills of the Blue Ridge Mountains, guests of Wisdom Oak can enjoy a picnic by the pond with on-site snacks or pack their own picnic goodies to pair with a bottle. If you’re lucky, you may come across one of the vineyard dogs roaming the property. All rescue dogs with their own personality, these pups are known to patrol the vines, greet guests, and do the occasional bartending.
